My Miss Rizos Salon NYC Experience: A place to LOVE and EMBRACE your natural CURLS!

Me with the owner of Miss Rizos Salon, Carolina Contreras

Do you love your curls? Are you ready to LOVE your curls? Are you thinking about the “big chop”? Looking for a community that shares your similar curly hair story? I have a place for you! Miss Rizos Salon in NYC, one of the newest curly hair salons in the city! This place is magical…. Here’s why:

I was selected to be one of their first clients to have a Miss Rizos Salon experience! Yes, I say experience because it wasn’t just a regular salon, it felt like a home. It felt like history was being made right in front of me. This salon was established by Carolina Contreras with it’s first location opened in the Dominican Republic in 2014. One of her goals is to “have a space dedicated specifically to curly hair care without the application of chemicals or heat.”

There is nothing wrong with having curly hair, but learning how to embrace them with self-love and care takes a lot of self-awareness and education about your ROOTS!

As soon as I walked in, my experience started.

The staff was extremely welcoming, kind, and had the most beautiful smiles. Soft music was playing in the background, the plants at the entrance added a natural earth feel, and the simple and clean design calmed my soul.

The Consultation

The appointment started with a quick but precise consultation about my specific hair pattern and hair routines. My stylist asked me questions , listened to my concerns, and walked me through the experience. I really like that they take time to ask you these questions and provide positive feedback on how to maintain and keep your curls healthy.

Wash, Cut, & Style

The service that I had was a wash, cut, and style. My stylist took her time in cutting my curls while she showed me exactly what she was cutting and how much she would cut. I know I am not the only one who is forever fearful that a salon will chop your hair up and leave you feeling defeated. I explained to her that I wanted my bounce back but did not want to lose length. She listened and delivered!

During the styling, she used Kinky Curl products, a foam and cream. I never used this brand before BUT I think I might try it out. She sectioned my hair, and began applying the products to each section then brushing with a Denman Brush and using her hands to scrunch each individual curl (talk about precision!). After the product application, she diffused my hair catching each curl, and I could see my hair just growing and starting to bounce back!

Beautiful Curls & a Happy Soul

When I saw my hair I was completely satisfied and my curls looked beautiful! Not only were my curls beautiful, my SOUL felt so happy. Let me tell you, embracing your natural hair is the most freeing thing that I have ever done. I think about my culture, my history, and the times that I denied my curly hair, I was basically denying MYSELF.
